Back issues are one of the biggest reasons students seek out a yoga class – neck pain? lower back pain? upper back stiffness? The spine and the back are part of the core of our movement, so having a pain in any piece will drive us to looking for any solution. The beauty of yoga is that it does not just address the pain alone, but looks at our whole system of movement to improve posture, strength, and support of the back, therefore giving us overall health and wellness in the process.
Our neck movement is not just relegated to the 7 cervical vertebrae and our lower back is not just the movement of the lumbar. Our hips and shoulders, the way we use our arms and the way we carry our body all effect the myriad of joints that make up the entire spinal column. Most spines aren’t straight and the spine has curves that it should keep, so knowing how to move and be aware as we move is imperative for a strong, pain free back.
During these four weeks, we will move from the tailbone up to the crown of the head, practicing postures that all relate back to this important centerpiece of our body. Length, strength, and space are all needed for the health of the spine and the back, and the practice of yoga provides it all!
This series will be good for any level of student. It will be offered both in person and online as a hybrid class. You will need wall space and props for practice: 2 bricks, 3 or more blankets, a strap, a yoga chair or comparable height, and a bolster will be helpful. If you are in acute pain or need therapeutic help, this will NOT be the class for you. Please contact email@example.com if you have any questions or concerns about attendance.
